Faster Copper Tube Swaging

Cutting
Prepare the copper tubing for installation by cutting the tube to the proper length using a tubing cutter.

Deburring
Next, use the deburring tool to remove the burr from the inside of the copper tubing.

Swaging
- Select the expander head.
- Swage tubing end by squeezing tool handles for three times.

Brazing
The swaged end joint is fabricated through a cold deformation process to the outer pipe that is then welded to the inner pipe.

Copper Tube Swaging Tool Kit
IWS-3814C copper tubing expanding tool kit provides a variety of tools for your copper tube project. Use to cut, remove burrs from copper tube as well as swage. It features auto rotate capability for expansion due to a stable ratcheting mechanism. Users can simply hold the tubing and tool in place while separating and closing the handles to expand the tubing. Learning how to use a swaging tool is effective for shaping a relatively soft metal such as copper, and can give you more control over your home plumbing and other welding projects.
Tips for High Quality Swaging:
- Only swage soft copper or hard copper that has been pre-annealed by heating.
- Attach an expander head that matches the diameter of the tube to the end of the tool.
- Fit the head into the end of the tube and gradually squeeze the handles.
- Release when the end of the tube is fully swaged.
What is copper swaging in HVAC?
Swaging is the process of joining two pieces of copper tubing of the same diameter by expanding or stretching the end of one piece to fit over the other so that joint may be soldered or brazed.
Can you swage hard copper?
Users should only swage soft copper or hard copper that has been pre-annealed by heating in case of pipe wall cracking during expanding.
What size copper tubing is used for HVAC?
The typical outer diameter ranges from 1/8 inch to 13⁄8 inch. Markings of ACR are done on the tubing to indicate that it is used for air conditioning and refrigeration purposes.
What are differences between swage and flare?
Flared ends tend to have an approximately conical shape. Swaged ends tend to have a cylindrical shape.
